Are
demotivational posters parodies of motivational posters?

It
is often said that a single picture can convey what would be required of a
thousand words. But even more powerful is a single picture and a few words that
leave you thinking. When combined, these could be so powerful that they attract
your attention in a way that neither just a picture nor words alone can ever do.
Demotivational posters, created by Despair Inc. do just that. Unlike
conventional motivational posters that
are meant to give you a lift and rejuvenate your mind, demotivational posters
present events from a sarcastic point of view. You can sample some of them at
our demotivational poster series. At
first glance, these posters may seem somewhat like parodies of the more common
motivational posters, but a closer look reveals that they actually do have a
silent albeit thought provoking message to convey.
Some
have argued that demotivational posters are indeed simply and plainly parodies
of motivational posters, marketing gimmicks designed to appeal to the consumer.
After all, their basic design looks very much like that of motivational posters,
you know, the bright and attractive picture in the center matted by a black
background with quotes written at the bottom in white. Yes, they do have similar
characteristics to motivational posters in everything but content, and believe
it, content happens to be king here.
Yet,
like motivational posters, some demotivational posters can provide inspiration.
For instance the poster entitled "Irresponsibility" (the last poster
in series 3 of our demotivational poster series) plainly states that "No
single raindrop believes it is to blame for the flood." We recommended this
to be an ideal poster for use where the CEO of a company is about to announce a
great loss, say in annual sales, to company employees. Surprisingly, we noticed
that Despair Inc. had also recommended this poster for people in the
business world - individual investors, the business media, venture capitalists
and entrepreneurs who blame pretty much everyone but themselves. And, as Despair
does for most of its posters, it recommended it for disaffected college students
too.
One
thing is certain, practically everyone walking into a room where a
demotivational poster hangs, on seeing it for the first time, smiles. And that
serves the purpose of these posters - combining pictures and words and conveying
a very powerful message that inspires, demotivates and at the same time leaves
one wondering.
