Bullfighting is a very ancient sport with some historians believing that as early as 2000 BC, men and women were already involved in confronting bulls based on records available from wall paintings. In the Roman empire, bullfights were also common and especially in the Iberian peninsula of present day Spain.
The posters and art prints above are from a wide variety of sources. Some feature art prints from famous painters like Pablo Picasso (such as the first poster depicted). Others are from vintage poster collections. By visiting the AllPosters.com site, you can sample a range of bullfight posters from a great number of artists that include some well-known masters and contemporary artists. Vintage bullfight posters are also available.
The bulls used in bullfights are specially bred. They differ from domesticated bulls as they are specially raised to be hostile and to charge at moving objects. This is why they are seen to charge at the red piece of cloth in the ring. This has nothing to do with the color of the cloth but simply because it is a moving object which the bull instinctively attacks.
In some of the posters above, you can see a bull charging at an object. Bullfighting had always been an acceptable form of sport in the past. With growing concern especially from animal rights groups, some members of the public have started questioning the morality behind the sport especially as it involves the killing of the bull in the end.
Whatever your views, we hope that you can appreciate the art work depicted in the poster and art print collection shown above as part of a heritage sport that played a significant role in the lives of people.
More information on other poster collections is also available.
