The
character education poster as a great resource in promoting civility and values

Character
education is inculcating in the young ones of society, especially teenagers and
adolescents, values that help foster and promote a sense of civic responsibility,
tolerance, morals and etiquette. The use of character education posters and
other forms of motivational value driven art which demonstrate character with
beautiful and powerful illustrations and quotes can help imbibe in young people
a culture that prepares them for the great roles they would be expected to play
as leaders of tomorrow. Such posters are ideal teaching resources for the
classroom, homes and offices. We present a sample of these posters below that
touch on themes like kindness, honesty, tolerance and respect.
Kindness.
"No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted" - Aesop.
This poster uses the illustration of a potter assisted by a child to demonstrate
the value of what it means to be kind. Indeed kindness is a character that is
never wasted for it always returnes to you, sometimes when you least expect.
Honesty.
"The truth is the right answer". Honesty and integrity are two core
values needed to be passed on to our children and young ones. This character
education poster emphasizes the need for truthfulness equating it with what is
right, for dishonesty does not only damage one but society as a whole.
Also,
as the poster on the left states: "Better to fail with honor than to
succeed with fraud" - Sophocles. The values of honor and honesty
when imbibed in young people help prepare them as the greatest assets of the
future.
Integrity.
"If it is not right, do not do it. If it is not true, do not say it" -
Marcus Aurelius. This quote comes from one of the greatest emperors of
the Roman empire and one of the five considered to be good emperors. Its value
still resonates clearly for character building in society today.
Good
character education involves teaching people about tolerance. On the poster to
the left are the words: "Share our similarities, celebrate our
differences" - M. Scott Puck. Tolerance brings about peace and a
willingness to learn, ridding society of ignorance and prejudice.
Fairness.
It's about doing things the way they should be done without favoritism or bias.
"Win or loose, do it fairly" -Knute Rockne. In teaching
character education, fairness should also be seen as fighting against inequality
and working for justice, points clearly presented on the rightmost poster.
Loyalty.
"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work,
a civilization work" - Vince Lombardi. Team work is a great avenue
for people to display their character. That is where the value of loyalty comes
in with group goals superceding personal goals.
Trustworthiness.
Stated on the poster to the right is: "A faithful companion is a sure
anchor." Trust is not only a noble character in business but one we need to
get along with people in our daily lives. In the education of young people,
there is a need to teach them how to learn to trust their friends but only after
they have been found to be trustworthy.
Citizenship.
"We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone" - Dr.
Loretta Scott. Citizenship is about responsibility. The poster on the left
says it all, there's more to citizenship than inherited rights. Young people
should be educated on how to make the best use of these rights.
Below
are a few more posters that can be of value in character education. They deal
with respect and responsibility.
Building
a society in which people cherish and live by the values presented above is a
task for all. But teachers and educators have the added duty of rightly
