An
in-depth look at demotivational posters - Defeat

Anyone
who has ever participated in a race knows two things: there could only be one
winner, and the chances of that winner being you were heavily dependent on how
many runners they were in the race as well as how good they were. Despite the
odds of defeat, the human spirit is such that it is hardly put off by the fear
of failure.
The
Defeat demotivational poster states that "For Every Winner, There Are
Dozens Of Losers, Odds Are You're One Of Them". True. Like all
demotivational posters, this poster tries to present failure from a sarcastic
point of view filled with some humor. But what it presents is also fact.
But
how is one to reconcile the message of a poster which presents defeat as a fact
of life to more conventional motivational posters that often tell us to see
defeat as nothing but a wakening call to improve our performance? Now, that's
where the difference lies. Motivational posters always tend to be optimistic,
focusing on what ought to be possible as though the impossible never existed.
And demotivational posters? Well, wouldn't say they are pessimistic but rather
realistic. They are down to earth, thought provoking works of art that present
to us the world as it is. Okay, sometimes with a bit of exaggeration.
