Demotivational
posters - could they be inspiring?
No
one ever looks forward to a boring weekend with nothing to do. Rather, we all -
or at least many of us - try to make the best out of our weekends be it having a
nice time with family and friends, attending a concert or just going out to the beach and enjoying nature's fresh waves. The same holds
for every other aspect of our lives. You know, we've been taught to believe in
positives. Think positively, set your goals and go after them. This has to a
large extent been the bedrock upon which society is built and needless to say it
might just have been the secret behind the success of many a great man and
woman.
Motivational tools are essential to help us achieve our dreams and indeed
they come in many forms. College students who want to be successful in their
studies tend to hang out with top A students trying to find out what it is that
makes them tick and how on earth they keep getting As. Those who want to excel
at sports train with the very best and watch, albeit secretly, their every move
on the field or in the pool in a bid to enhance their own performance.
Even kids
are selective about whom they call close friends. They tend to go for people who
have a thing or two in common with them and who they love being with. These are
the friends that motivate them and put smiles on their faces.
Motivational posters with words like "Dream big - dream really
big", "EXCEL - all glory comes from daring to begin" and
"Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference" are meant to
reaffirm our values and inspire us towards achieving goals set forth as well as
becoming better people. But do we really need all this motivation?
Not
everyone thinks so. Or, if they do, they seem to say the opposite. Despair
Inc. is a company that specializes in selling what it
calls demotivational products and it sure has a reason for saying so. On its
website, it claims that its aim is to help people achieve their true potential.
Motivational speakers often speak of helping people bring out their unlimited
potential. Well, so does Despair Inc. But what does unlimited potential really
mean?
A typical motivational speaker addressing high school students might base his or
her talk on the need for the students to set goals and remain focused and
determined towards achieving such goals. Now, that’s telling the students to
bring out great potentials in them to be what they truly want to be.
Despair
Inc. on
the other hand doesn’t see the term ‘unlimited potential’ as being
one-sided. You could for instance go from becoming a wholly reasonable person to
an irrational fool. Or perhaps you could be a team player within who lurks the
potential for becoming an argumentative loner. These are the potentials despair
claims it wants to help people unleash for it says that no matter who you are,
you could be much worse, with the potential to be much less than you already
are.
But,
of course, we all know we could be much worse than we already are. Why does
Despair Inc. go the extra mile of creating demotivational products to remind people
of this? Would I rather have a poster on my wall that reads, “Go for it –
you can make it” or one that says, “For every winner, there are dozens of
losers. Odds are that you are one of them”, as shown above. Perhaps that doesn’t sound
demotivating enough. How about these:
- It’s difficult to comprehend how insane some people can be. Especially
when you’re insane (with the picture of a skydiver jumping off a mountain
cliff in the background)
as shown below.
-
The
journey of a thousand miles sometimes ends very, very badly (with the background
picture of a salmon having traveled a long distance to spawn, ending up in the
mouth of a bear)
as shown below.

Rather
than finding these posters demotivating, I find them satirical. They do not
cause one to get depressed. Rather, they make you smile. And, perhaps, that’s
the message Despair Inc. tries to get across. Life can be hard, times may be bad but
you could be in a worse situation. In a way, while they do not go out of their
way to motivate you in an out right manner, these posters are motivational in
nature. Indeed the journey of a thousand miles may sometimes end very, very
badly but it sure isn’t going to happen to me. Now, that’s the
spirit!
