Painting MDF

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. To make MDF, softwood chippings from birch and larch are steamed till they become fine wood fibers. These fine wood fibers are then bonded together by the use of resins and pressed into boards with the application of heat. Both the birch and larch trees are deciduous and have hard close grained wood structures that are ideal for making MDF.

MDF is a smooth surfaced yet hard board. Compared to softwood, it is much more stable and attractive. Amongst other reasons why MDF may be used instead of softwood or plywood is the fact that it is dense, flat and can easily be machined. One other beauty of MDF is the fact that it can be cut, drilled, filled or machined without damage being done to its surface.

MDF is an ideal product to use for interior home furnishing and decoration such as in the construction of cupboards, shelves and art panels. Though it is a versatile product, it should not be used outdoors where it can be exposed to wet weather conditions as this will damage it.

Painting MDF

Painting MDF produces a smooth quality surface. Oil paints, water-based paints or varnishes may be used when painting MDF.  Additionally, veneers and laminates can be used when doing a finish on MDF.

MDF is relatively easy to paint. An Important point to note is that you will need to fill any small gaps with a wood filler. A soft damp cloth can be used to remove any dust. With these in mind, you are only a step away from painting your MDF. But please always remember as with all painting operations that you need to put on a mask as well as work in a properly ventilated room.

When painting MDF, you need to be cautious of a few facts. Read these carefully as they are very important. Tough MDF is easy to use and paint, it can become dangerous if certain precautions are not taken. MDF contains a substance known as urea formaldehyde. This substance can be released from MDF when you are cut it, saw it or use a sandpaper on it. Urea formaldehyde is a dangerous substance which can affect the eyes and lungs.

Therefore, you must ensure that you use a facemask (which protects both your nose and eyes) when sawing or sanding MDF. You must also work in a properly ventilated room at all times. Keep away from the MDF dust which results from the sawing or sanding operation. This can be dangerous to your lungs. Knowing these things can make your painting experience a great joy.
