Priming MDF

priming mdf

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. It is a smooth surfaced and hard board. MDF is also very stable and attractive in comparison to other wood-based boards such as plywood. MDF is an ideal product for use in interior home furnishing, decoration, doors, cupboards and art frames.

Priming of MDF is a first step before it is painted and put to use. For this, there is a wide range of MDF and wood primers available in the market from which you can make your selection. An important thing to do before you begin priming is to prepare the surface of the MDF board. For this, you need to ensure that the surface is clean, dry and free from any greasy or oily materials. First sand the surface and then wipe with a clean white cloth or paper towel.

After preparing the surface of the MDF board, you will need to prepare the primer. The preparation step might differ from one primer manufacturer to another. Therefore, it is very important that you read the primer instructions carefully. Most primers used for MDF and wood priming are highly flammable.

When priming, ensure that you work in an area free of any open flames or flammable materials. This is of high importance for your personal protection. You will also need to work in an area free of any smoke, cigarette or heat source. Also ensure that you are adequately protected during the priming operation by using a facemask which protects both your eyes and nose. Work in a very well ventilated area and do not inhale the vapor from the primer as it could be hazardous.

With these in mind, you can rest assured and enjoy priming your MDF board.
