South
Carolina lies on the
southeastern United States and borders the Atlantic ocean. It got its name from
a Latin form of the name Charles, in reference to King Charles I of England in
1692. Its largest city and capital is Columbia. South
Carolina is also known as
the Palmetto State in reference to the palmetto (the state tree) which grows in
coastal areas and appears on the state flag shown in the art
print thumbnail on the left. In addition to the palmetto, a crescent moon also appears on the
South
Carolina flag.

Toady Charleston, which is located in southeastern South
Carolina is one of the
busiest ports in southeastern United States, with a beautiful harbor. Harry Fenn
is noted for his nostalgic paintings of Charleston, such as A
Garden in Charleston and A Glimpse of Charleston, both of which are shown below.

Other
beautiful South Carolina
art prints feature
paintings of some of the great variety of birds found in the state such as the
Carolina turtle dove and the once plentiful Carolina parrot. The Carolina
turtle dove, also known as mourning dove is a very beautiful and calm bird. It
is well known for its breeding which occurs in springtime. The Carolina
parrot is unfortunately now extinct. Once considered an agricultural pest, this
very beautiful bird was culled in large numbers. Except for a paintings
and art prints which survive, little else
is left of the Carolina parrot.
Few
paintings
of South Carolina
could be more beautiful than W. H. Bartlett's Charleston South Carolina,
on the right. This magnificent art
piece captures the
Charleston harbor as it would have looked in the 1850s. At that time, Charleston
was a heavily reliant on the cotton crop as its main source of income, and it
would have been very common to find ships being loaded with cotton. To the extreme
right
is James Blakeway's more modern photographic art
print of Charleston.
Our
final South Carolina art prints feature the William Brice Stadium at the
University of South Carolina. The stadium was originally named the Carolina
stadium and has a sitting capacity of almost 80,000. We also show an art
print featuring a view of the University of South Carolina.
