The
modern circus traces its origins to the mid 18th century in England. Circuses
were initially mobile centers of entertainment. By the 19th century however,
permanent circuses took hold in a number of large European cities.
In
the United States, the circus began in 1792. In 1871, a huge circus in Brooklyn
put up what was known as "The Greatest Show on Earth". The Ringling
Bros. organized their first circus in 1884 and ran a series of successful circus
shows in the United States.
Vintage
circus posters help us capture the golden moments of this era of entertainment,
little of which is left today.
